Council use letter to criticise coalition plan to cut funding

The government’s decision to cut the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) projects in Camden, which would have brought £250 million of funding to the borough and much-needed improvement to school buildings, has been criticised in a council letter to the secretary of state for education, Michael Gove.
According to Camden Council, the letter from cabinet member councillor Heather Johnson attacks the decision to pull out of the programme that has been underway for the past four years. The letter also highlighted that some schools are on the verge of starting building work.
Earlier this month, the government announced that BSF funding would be cancelled at Camden schools, including Camden School for Girls and Hampstead. BSF projects for the UCL Academy, Swiss Cottage and Jack Taylor special schools, and South Camden Community School will be reviewed by government before a final decision on whether they will proceed is made.
